There were, of course, many, many reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire. Often times, it’s difficult to determine a cause from a symptom, such as it is when considering the mercenaries Rome hired.
Many of the mercenaries Rome hired had a natural antagonism towards Rome to begin with. But, Rome would hire them, thus, enriching and strengthening the mercenaries which had a natural antagonism towards Rome. With the better view of hindsight, we can now see and understand how Rome’s actions were of supreme idiocy, and this alone was a huge contributor, if not the primary cause, of the fall of Rome.
Fortunately, history doesn’t repeat itself …….. Oh, wait!!!!!!!
