For their own good, and for the good of others, it is vital that we correct our children when their actions are rebellious. Wrongful behavior produces painful consequences in their lives simply because they are in cooperation with the enemy whose goal it is to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). Parental guidance can help them avoid unnecessary trouble.
In a healthy relationship with their children, parents can even have a positive influence on them and hold them accountable even in their adult years because of the respect that has been developed. Apparently, this was not the case with Eli and his sons. The Lord reprimanded Eli for not having restrained his sons when he had knowledge of their evil behavior and irreverence as they served together in the tabernacle.
