Food for Thought: John 21:19-22
Isn’t that just human nature? We notice it quite often among children. “How come he gets more than me?” “Why doesn’t she have to do …?” “It’s not fair, they get to do … and I don’t.” Always comparing ourselves to the other guy and demanding that everything be equal. The answer that Jesus gave Peter when asked about the fate of John sounds very much like one that a teacher or a parent would give: “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me (vs. 22).” In other words, you just be concerned about yourself and what you are to do. And remember Who is in charge—not you.
Jesus surely didn’t sound so short with him, but the gist of the response is the same…
