Gas Price Rings Up Big Cost For Bush

WASHINGTON — It’s debatable whether President Bush has much to do with what companies charge for gasoline, but as prices keep rising, he’s paying a political cost.

“Gasoline prices drive the perception of the economy,” said Chris Barnes, associate director of the University of Connecticut Center for Survey Research & Analysis. “It makes people feel worse than they should.”

No matter how many jobs are created or how tame inflation remains, for unleaded regular, they’re going to feel uneasy about the economy.

The White House knows the political danger. Last week, Commerce Secretary Donald Evans said the administration was seriously considering steps aimed at bringing down prices, and was clearly worried that the rising cost of fuel could dampen consumer spending.
