President Obama dismissed the controversy surrounding his deal with the Taliban for five Guantanamo detainees in exchange for the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdhal, adding that he would not apologize.
“I make absolutely no apologies for making sure that we get back a young man to his parents, and that the American people understand that this is somebody’s child and that we don’t condition whether or not we make the effort to try to get them back,” he said.
Using a golf metaphor, Obama dismissed criticism in Washington, D.C. about the deal.
“I’m never surprised by controversies that are whipped up in Washington. That’s par for the course,” he said.
Obama said that he would not apologize for bringing Bergdhal home.
“We saw an opportunity and we seized it and I make no apologies for it,” Obama said at a news conference in Brussels during the G7 summit.
