On Wednesday the Senate agriculture committee approved a GOP proposal that would amend the farm bill the Senate is considering to ban from getting food stamps. On its surface, the idea sounds unobjectionable, but the measure would have “strongly racially discriminatory effects,” according to the non-partisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP).
I’d actually provide some data before making such a racially charged post. Murders, I’d buy because of the inner city violence. Rapists and pedophiles? Are there numbers behind this claim? I don’t know. And, it doesn’t matter to me.
Murderers, rapists, pedophiles …. what ever their skin color need to be treated the same regardless of the demographics.
That said, I would oppose the legislation. And, I seriously doubt this would pass a constitutional test. This would amount to an ex post facto law. What exactly the appropriate punishment is for various crimes, anyone can debate. But…
